crémant de bourgogne, françois mikulski, burgundy, france 2012 58- This is not “true” Champagne but who cares? This is a delicious sparkling wine. If you are having guests for dinner, order a second bottle of this “bubbly”, and look like a sport.

 

taittinger, cuvée prestige, brut NV 95- This is one of my favorite NV [non vintage] Champagnes. Classic!

 

minière f & r, 'influence cuvée brut,' NV 150- A small “grower” [artisanal Champagne] with great mineral flavors.

 

pol roger, 'cuvée winston churchill' 2002 450- the 2002 vintage was excellent, so this fantastic Champagne will be “bright” and fresh. A great vintage Champagne.

Chenin Blanc domaine huet, vouvray, 'clos du bourg - sec,' loire, france 1993 155-This is aged Chenin Blanc which allows the yellow apple skin and nut flavors to evolve and become more complex. A very interesting wine from Huet who is a brilliant winemaker.

St Aubin ramonet, 'les charmois' 2014 175-]This Chardonnay is a great value wine because St Aubin is an area away from other expensive villages such as Puligny and Chassagne. Ramonet is a master winemaker.

 

Chardonnay peter michael, 'mon plaisir,' knight's valley 2006 180- I have tasted Peter Michaels Chardonnay and Pinots many times and have always been impressed.

 

Meursault louis jadot, 'perrières' 2012 195-

 

Viogner guigal, 'la doriane,' condrieu 2011 200- Condrieu [bend in

the river] is a wine dominated by white flower scents and citrus flavors. Guigal is a master winemaker.

 

Chablis vincent dauvissat, 'séchet' 2012 205- Put Dauvissat on your wine radar because he is able to produce fantastic Chablis for a fair price. Dauvissat can express the true terroir [unique scents and flavors of the soil and surrounding flora/fauna] of a vineyard.

 

Puligny Montrachet pierre-yves colin-morey, 'champs gains' 2014 280- 

 

Corton Charlemagne henri boillot, 'corton charlemagne' 2011 420- This Grand Cru Chardonnay has intense mineral flavors. Boillot is a master winemaker who is able to express the true terroir of a vineyard site. A very special bottle of wine.

Beaujolais marcel lapierre, morgon 2016 85- Do not confuse this Beaujolais for that “super sweet” wine. This is Cru Beaujolais from Morgon and it can be as nuanced and complex as Burgundy Pinot Noir. This is an excellent food wine and Lapierre is a master winemaker.  

 

Savigny lès beaune jean-marc-pavelot 2010 93-

 

Vacqueyras roucas toumba, 'les restanques de cabassole' 2010 95- Most people do not order this fantastic “poor man Chateauneuf du Pape” because they cannot pronounce the name. This wine has very good bottle age, which softens the tannins and allows the fruit flavors to emerge. Repeat after me… Vah-Kay-Rah..Vah-Kay-Rah, and order this wine with confidence.

 

Rioja contino, 'gran reserva' 2010 98- This could be the best value red wine on the whole list.  An excellent Rioja choice!

Volnay bitouzet-prieur 2012 110- This Pinot Noir is from the very good 2012 vintage and is produced by an excellent winemaker. This is a great value wine. 

 

Crozes Hermitage jaboulet, 'domaine de thalabert' 2010 115-

 

Vacqueyras château des tours (château rayas) 2010 125- This Grenache is produced by Chateau Rayas the famed Chateauneuf du Pape winemaker. The most important factor when choosing a wine from a restaurant wine list is who produces the wine. Winemakers are like artists. They create the wine.

 

Zinfandel turley, 'juvenile,' california 2003 125-

 

Cornas lionnet, 'terre brûlée' 2010 130- I love Lionnet’s Cornas [Syrah]. This wine came in first place at a “blind” [can’t see the labels] tasting. Lionnet is able to express the true terroir [unique scents and flavors of the soil and surrounding flora/fauna] of a vineyard.  

 

Chateauneuf du Pape saint préfert, 'réserve auguste favier' 2009 145- A Chateauneuf from the excellent 2009 vintage. 

 

Merlot plumpjack, napa, california 2015 145- A great Merlot with intense dark fruit [black cherry-blackberry-black raspberry] flavors.

 

Chianti castello dei rampolla, chianti classico riserva 1990 145- The 1990 vintage was excellent in Chianti and with this much bottle age, the great Sangiovese fruit flavors will be evolved and complex. A beautiful bottle of Reserva Chianti wine.

 

Nebbiolo castello di conti, 'il rosso delle donne' boca, piedmont 2000 150- . A great value wine.

 

Mencia Spain rodrigo méndez (raúl pérez), 'el barredo' bierzo 2010 160- This as a blend of the Mencia and Pinot Noir grape. Ask the Sommelier to describe this Mencia wine and see if it matches your preferred style of wine.

 

Chateauneuf du Pape vieux télégraphe, 'la crau' 2007 165- Vieux Telegraphe is one of my favorite producers in Chateauneuf and this one is from the excellent 2007 vintage.

 

 

St Joseph jean-louis chave 2012 170- 

 

Cote Rotie rostaing 2005 175- I love Rostaings Cote Rotie [Syrah]. 

 

Bordeaux château rouget 2009 175- The 2009 vintage was excellent and I have been drinking a lot of them this past year. The Petit Chateaux [small usually family owned wineries] produced fantastic affordable wines like this one. This Bordeaux is from Pomerol [Merlot grapes] so the fruit flavors will be lush and sweet. A great value wine.

 

Cote du Rhone Cothâteau de fonsalette (château rayas) 2000 195- This is not your typical “pedestrian” Cotes du Rhone. This is produced by Chateau Rayas, the famed Chateauneuf du Pape producer. This wine has great bottle age and is from the very good 2000 vintage.

 

Pinot Noir dominique lafon, 'les grèves' 2015 195- 

 

Barolo cordero di montezemolo, monfalletto 2001 210- The 2001 vintage was near perfect in Barolo. With this much bottle age, this wine should be amazing.

 

Chambolle Musigny ghislaine barthod 2005 235- Chambolle Pinot Noirs are my favorite red Burgundy because they are almost “ethereal”. They are light in color but possess intense red fruit [strawberry-cherry-raspberry] flavors. Think of a strong beautiful woman. The 2005 vintage was excellent and with bottle age, this wine should be amazing.

 

Volnay d'angerville, 'champans' 2010 240-

 

Umbria sagrantino, arnoldo caprai, sagrantino de montefalco, '25 anni' umbria 2003 260- One of the most important factors in choosing a wine from a restaurant list, is bottle age. Older is not always better but bottle age softens the tannins and allows the the fruit flavors to evolve and become more complex. In this Sangratino, you have the necessary bottle age to let the fruit flavors emerge. 

 

California Cabernet laurel glen, sonoma mountain 2001 275- Laurel Glen is more of my favorite California Cabernets because the fruit quality is amazing. The 2001 vintage was excellent and with this much bottle age, this Cab should be near perfect!

 

Cote Rotie guigal, 'château d'ampuis' 2009 300-  A beautiful Cote Rotie.

 

Nuit St George robert chevillon, 'les vaucrains' 2015 300-

 

Bordeaux château lynch bages 2009 350- This is great Paulliac [Cabernet Sauvignon] from the amazing 2009 vintage. Lynch Bages wines are consistently fantastic for the price.

 

California Cabernet diamond creek, 'volcanic hill' napa 1990 365-I just went to an older California Cabernet tasting to see how the wines were aging. The Diamond Creek was one of the wines I liked best. This is “old school” Cabernet wine making at its best. 

 

Brunello di Montalcino altesino 1990 375

 

Gevrey-Chambertin hubert lignier, 'aux combottes' 2012 425- Hubert Lignier is one of the greatest winemakers in Burgundy. This Premier Cru [grapes grown in the Aux Combottes vineyard] Pinot Noir is from the great 2012 vintage. He is able to express the true terroir of the Aux Combottes vineyard site in his wine.

 

Super Tuscan antinori, 'solaia' tuscany 2001 445- The 2001 vintage was historic and this wine is from Antinori, who invented the Super Tuscan. This wine will be memorable!
