Aquavit Wine List Review- ! Michelin Star
N.V. GOSSET, GRAND RESERVE, BRUT, AŸ 88- I love Gosset Champagne.
SANCERRE, DOMAINE DIDIER RIAMBAULT, FRANCE 45
GRUNER VELTINER, LANGENLOIS KAMPTAL, LOIMER, KAMPTAL, AUSTRIA- 49-
2014 CROZES-HERMITAGE, LAURENT COMBIER, RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE 49-Syrah
2014 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGE, VIEILLES VIGNES, DOMAINE DANIEL RION ET FILS, BURGUNDY, FRANCE 68- red Burgundy [Pinot Noir]
2001 SCHRAMSBERG, BLANC DE BLANCS, LATE DISGORGED, CALISTOGA, CALIFORNIA 160- This is a steal! “Late Disgorged” means the wine was aged longer before release and brings a “freshness” to this sparkling wine.
CHAMPAGNE LE MESNIL, GRAND CRU, BLANC DE BLANCS, BRUT, LE MESNIL-SUR-OGER 125-
J-M SÉLÈQUE, SOLESSENCE, BRUT, PIERRY 138- Here is a lovely NV [non vintage] Brut [dry] Champagne.
2008 PIERRE PETERS, LES CHÉTILLONS, BLANC DE BLANCS, LE MESNIL-SUR-OGER 350. The two most important things to consider when choosing a wine from a restaurant wine list are vintage and producer [Chateaux]. Here is a Champagne from the amazing 2008 vintage. A great vintage ensures the wine will be able to age and not lose the fruit flavors with time. The flavors will actually evolve and become more complex and the bubbles will change in quality. If you have never tasted great vintage Champagne, pick this one and enjoy.
SANCERRE, PIERRE MORIN, OVIDE 76- a great white wine value.
2014 RIESLING, JOH. JOS. PRÜM, GRAACHER HIMMELREICH, KABINETT, MOSEL 100- e.
SAVENNIERES, DOMAINE DES BAUMARD, CLOS DU PAPILLON 92Chenin Blanc
2015 FRIULANO, RACCARO, VIGNA DEL ROLAT, COLLIO 90
2015 CHABLIS, LE BAS DE CHAPELOT, DOMAINE ELENI ET EDOUARD VOCORET 95- Chablis is my favorite white Burgundy [Chardonnay]
2014 MUSCADET-SÈVRE ET MAINE, DOMAINE DU GRAND MOUTON, ONE 75- great value white wine.
2015 PATZ & HALL, DUTTON RANCH, SONOMA COAST 110- I just tasted the 2005 vintage of this wine and it was beautiful. Classic California Chardonnay. A good pick.
2014 SAINT-AUBIN, 1ER CRU, LES CHARMOIS, PHILIPPE COLIN 148- St Aubin is located “just outside” the “famous” areas of white Burgundy [Puligny- Chassagne-Meursault] and that is why this is a great wine value.
2016 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, LUCIEN ET ANDRÉ BRUNEL, LES CAILLOUX 135- Are you tired of Chardonnay? Pick this Rhone white wine.
2014 BORDEAUX, BLANC DE LYNCH-BAGES 155-
2015 KISTLER, LES NOISETIERS, SONOMA COAST 168
2015 POUILLY-FUISSÉ, CLOS DES QUARTS, MONOPOLE, CHATEAU DES QUARTS 170- This great Chardonnay is not from Burgundy but from the Macon region in France. It does not have the same “pedigree”, so you don’t over pay for great Chardonnay. A nice pick.
2015 PULIGNY-MONTRACHET, HENRI BOILLOT 180-
2011 CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET, 1ER CRU, MORGEOT, DOMAINE MARC MOREY & FILS 195-
2000 PETER MICHAEL, BELLE CÔTE, SONOMA COUNTY 245- This 18 year old Chardonnay is from one of the best producers in California. Ask the Sommelier if this wine has lost its “youth”. Ask if this Chardonnay is going to “blow me away” or is it going to “disappoint” me?
2015 CHABLIS, 1ER CRU, LA FOREST, RENE ET VINCENT DAUVISSAT 255-
2007 CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE, GRAND CRU, LOUIS LATOUR 295-
2013 MUSAR JEUNE, BEKAA VALLEY, LEBANON 56- Lebanese Rose? Really? Yep! I have tasted Musars Rose from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, and it has been excellent.
2015 SAUMUR, DOMAINE GUIBERTEAU 75- Cabernet Franc
2013 APOLLONI VINEYARDS, WILLAMETTE VALLEY 84- Oregon Pinot Noir
2014 SANTENAY, CAMILLE GIROUD 98- Burgundy Pinot Noir
2016 FLEURIE, CLOS DE LA ROILETTE, CUVÉE TARDIVE 95- Don’t dismiss this Beaujolais as one of those “super fruity” red wines. This is Crus Beaujolais from Fleurie and can be as complex and nuanced as Burgundy Pinot Noir. A fantastic food and value wine.
2009 CHÂTEAU TOUR BAYARD, MONTAGNE-SAINT-ÉMILION 88- Never heard of Chateau Tour Bayard? It does not matter, because in a great vintage, like the 2009, every Chateaux makes great wine. I have been drinking tons of 2009s from Petit Chateaux [ small, often family owned vineyards] and loving them!
2014 CHAPPELLET, MOUNTAIN CUVÉE, NAPA COUNTY 82-
2013 ROSSO DI MONTALCINO, LE RAGNAIE, TUSCANY 90- This is the “skinny” “younger” brother of Brunello di Montalcino. The are some of characteristics of Brunellos without the “weight” and “body”. The benefit of ordering a Rosso di Montalcino on a restaurant wine list is, you can drink them young and they are a great value.
2015 CROZES-HERMITAGE, ALAIN GRAILLOT 95- Syrah
ZINFANDEL, RIDGE, LYTTON SPRINGS, DRY CREEK VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY -98-
2011 CORNAS, TERRE BRULÉE, DOMAINE LIONNET 110- This Cornas [Syrah] came in first place, at a blind tasting I was fortunate to attend. An excellent pick.
2000 CHÂTEAU MONTLISSE, SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU 115- A Petit Chateaux value wine. This wine is from the historic 2000 vintage [only 1945 and 1982 vintages have received the same praise].
2013 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, DOMAINE JEAN CHAUVENET 120-
2015 SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE, 1ER CRU, LES NARBANTONS, MONGEARD-MUGNERET 149- A great value Burgundy Pinot Noir. Why? Mongeard Mugneret produces Grand Crus red Burgundies at lofty prices. Here you get their expertise for a decent price.
2015 FIXIN, MÉO-CAMUZET FRÉRE & SOEURS 135-Meo Camuzet produces some very expensive red Burgundies, so here you are getting the same expertise with grapes from a less pedigreed village. A good value wine from the great 2015 vintage.
2012 DOMAINE SERENE, EVENSTAD RESERVE, WILLAMETTE VALLEY 170-Oregon Pinot Noir
2000 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, CHÂTEAU LA NERTHE 205- This wine is buried amongst other Chateauneuf du Papes. This one is from a great producer and from the really good 2000 vintage.
2002 AGLIANICO, IRPINIA ROSSO, PÀTRIMO, FEUDI DI SAN GREGORIO, CAMPANIA 210- a serious bottle of red wine.
2013 ALION, VEGA SICILIA, RIBERA DEL DUERO 225- Vega Sicilia is probably the most renowned winemaker in all of Spain. Here is his “basic” Tempranillo wine from the Ribera del Duer
2015 MOREY-SAINT-DENIS, DOMAINE DUJAC 265- Some people say that Morey St Denis and the name Domaine Dujac are synonymous. This Pinot Noir in the great 2015 vintage, with a noted producer should be an amazing wine to taste.
1984 DIAMOND CREEK, VOLCANIC HILL, CALISTOGA 450- I recently tasted older versions of Diamond Creek Cabernets and found them to be AMAZING!. This “old school”style of winemaking has given way to the “California” style of over extracted Cabernet “fruit bombs”. Visit the “good old days” when great California Cabernet was nuanced and balanced. Where else are you going to be able to taste Cabernet this mature?
