Minetta Tavern Wine List Review- 1 Michelin Star

Champagne

CRÉMANT DE LOIRE Langlois, Brut NV 65- This is not true Champagne, but is is delicious. If you are entertaining guests, order a second bottle of this “bubbly”, and look like a sport.

GASTON-CHIQUET Blanc de Blancs d'Ay, Brut, Champagne NV 155-This Blanc de Blanc [all Chardonnay grapes] has beautiful citrus, pineapple, and apple flavors. A very “crisp” [high acid] Champagne.

CHARTOGNE-TAILLET Brut Rosé, Champagne NV.140- this Rose Champagne has “bright” red fruit [strawberry] and stone fruit [peach] flavors.

White

Under $100.00

BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ Marcel Giraudon 2015……65- Aligote is the “sister” grape of Chardonnay in Burgundy. Great Aligote wine is produced by some of the most famed winemakers in Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet. This is a very “crisp” [high acid] wine with “pretty” floral notes.

RIESLING Empire Estate, Finger Lakes, New York 2015……..67- Don’t dismiss this Riesling from Upstate New York. The Riesling grape thrives in the cold climate.

. CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC Clos du Mont Olivet 2016….85. Are you tired of Chardonnay? Pick this “rich” white wine with citrus, stones fruit [peach-apricot], and honeysuckle flavors. Clos du Mount Olivet is a great producer.

.

POUILLY-FUISSÉ "Clos Varambon" Château de Rontets 2015 …….97.- This Chardonnay is from the Macon region in France, where great wine is made for a great price. The 2015 was a great vintage, so this wine will have “bright” and fresh fruit flavors.

SANCERRE "La Croix du Roy" Lucien Crochet 2015……90- Lucien Crochet is my favorite producer in the Loire Valley. His Sancerre [Sauvignon Blanc] is excellent. The La Croix du Rpy is especially fruit driven [citrus-pineapple].

CHARDONNAY Domaine Anderson, Anderson Valley, California 2015…90- If it is California Chardonnay you desire, pick this “classic” one.

Over $100.00

ANJOU BLANC "Les Bonnes Blanches" Agnès et René Mosse 2009.............. 110.- This is Chenin Blanc, which after 9 years of bottle age, has complex yellow apple skin and mineral flavors.

MEURSAULT "Les Gouttes d'Or" Jean-Michel Gaunoux 2008............. 170.- Here is a winner! This Premier Crus [grapes grown in the special Les Gouttes d’Or vineyard] Chardonnay has flavors of nuts, minerals, honey, and citrus.  Gaunoux is able to express the true terroir of the of his vineyard, so there are scents of the surrounding flora and fauna. Expressing the true terroir is the hallmark of a great winemaker. This Chardonnay is 8 years old and the fruit flavors will have evolved and become more complex.

CHARDONNAY "McCrea Vineyard" Kistler, Sonoma, California 2013.......... 170- If you are dining with people who know nothing about wine, order this California Chardonnay. I guarantee they will take notice of this “rich” “lush” wine.

Rose

CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ "Cuvée Benjamin" Domaine de l'Abbaye 2016…………….69 A very nice pale Provincial Rose with strawberry and nectarine flavors.

BANDOL ROSÉ Château Pradeaux 2014.............magnum....... 155- If you are having 5 or more guests for dinner, a second bottle of wine will be necessary. Pick this Magnum of fantastic Rose from the Bandol region. Chateaux Pradeux are excellent winemakers and this Rose will prove it.

Red

Under $100.00

ARBOIS ROUGE "Tradition" Domaine Rolet, Jura 2009……………….56- This a light bodied Pinot Noir wine with great red fruit [strawberry-raspberry-cherry] flavors.

MORGON Marcel Lapierre…………………………………………85- don’t dismiss this Beaujolais as that “super fruity” wine. This is Cru Beaujolais from Morgon. Lapierre is master winemaker and Crus Beaujolais can be as complex and as nuanced as Burgundy Pinot Noir.-

PINOT NOIR Melville, Santa Rita Hills, California ……………………………89- A California Pinot with a lot spice and red fruit [strawberry-cherry] flavors.

CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE-VILLAGES Plan de Dieu Par, Domaine Calendal 2014......88 Cotes du Rhone is usually a blEnd of “pedestrian” grapes to create a Rhone “table” wine. This is not the case with this serious artisanal Cotes du Rhone from Domaine Calendal.

MALBEC "Les Malbecs" Château Tire Pé, Bordeaux 2012……………………91- a great Malbec loaded with black fruit [blackberry-black cherry-dark plum] flavors.

LISTRAC-MÉDOC Château Fourcas Hosten 2009………………………….93-This is a FANTASTIC Bordeaux for the price. The 2009 vintage was excellent, so all the Petit Chateaux [small family owned wineries] all produced great wine at a bargain price. I have been drinking the Fourcas Hosten 2009 and 2010 vintage in my home for the past year. If you love Bordeaux, pick this wine.

Over $100.00

BORDEAUX BLEND "POV" Robert Sinskey, Napa Valley, California 2013................. 100- If you desire California Cabernet, pick this one. Why? Because it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. This blend allows the wine to enjoyed young, like this 2013. No serious tannin issues here, and a great price.

ZINFANDEL "Dot's Garden" Porter-Bass, Russian River Valley, California 2014..... 120. I love the dark plums and black cherry flavors in Zinfandel. The best part is that you can drink them young, like this 2014, because there are no “intense” tannins like Cabernet based wines have.

BANDOL "Les Lauves" Domaine la Suffrene 2005......................................... 127- Bandol [Mourvedre grapes] need a lot of bottle age to soften the “intense” tannins and allow the amazing fruit flavors to emerge. Here you have the necessary 13 years to let this Bandol sing.

CORNAS "Champelrose" Domaine Courbis 2014………………………………… 130. This is Syrah from the Cornas region in France and is one of my favorite wines. This Syrah has red [strawberry-cherry] and dark [blackberry-dark plums] and spice flavors.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE "La Bernardine" Michel Chapoutier 2014................. 160. Chapoutier is a brilliant winemaker in Chateauneuf du Pape. This wine has black cherry, black pepper, and black raspberry flavors.

CROZES-HERMITAGE "Domaine Raymond Roure" Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2005....... 164. This 13 year old Syrah is from the famed master winemakers at Jaboulet, The bottle age allows the red and dark fruit flavors to  evolve and become more complex [think stewed fruit flavors]. The Domaine Raymond Roure cuvee is very special.

SAINT-JULIEN Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases 2008............................ 168. This is the second label of the famed  Chateau Leoville Las Cases. This is a serious and complex Bordeaux and a good value. A perfect wine with “big “ [steak-lamb-chicken] food.

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY Domaine Christian Clerget 2013.............................. 175- Chambolle Pinot Noir is almost “ethereal”. Light in color but intense in red fruit [strawberry-raspberry-cherry] flavors. Think of a strong beautiful woman.

NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES "Les Pruliers" Domaine Chevillon 2014……………250- This is a very “masculine” [taught-sinewy] Premeir Crus [grapes grown in the special Les Prullier vineyard] Pinot Noir. Chevillon is a master winemaker in Nuit St George.

Magnum [2 bottles]

Red CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE "Clos du Calvaire" Vignobles Mayard 2012........ 185. If you are having 5 or most guests for dinner, a second bottle of wine will be necessary. Pick this Chateauneuf du Pape from the great and ready to drink 2012 vintage. Nothing says celebration like a big bottle being poured at the table.

White- SANCERRE Domaine Vacheron 2015......................................................... 150- Pick this great Sancerre [Sauvignon Blanc] for a group of 5 or more guests. There are fantastic fruit [citrus+pineapple] flavors.
