La Sirena Wine List Review- 1 Michelin Star
Bruno Giacosa Extra Brut Piemonte 2007 90- This is a great sparkling Italian wine with green apple flavors.
Rose Champagne Guy Larmandier Brut Rosé Vertus Premier Cru NV 90- A great Rose Champagne with “bright” red fruit [strawbeery-raspberry] flavors.
Philippe Gonet Brut Blanc de Blancs Signature NV 100- This NV [non vintage] Blanc de Blanc [all Chardonnay grapes] has a great “freshness” of fruit flavors.
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs NV 140-I love this NV [non vintage] Champagne with white flower and toasted bread crust scents and pear flavors.
Pinot Grigio Kettmeir Pinot Grigio 2016 60-This is a great Pinot Grigio with apple fruit flavors.
Vermentino Antinori Guado al Tasso Vermentino 2015 65- This is one of my favorite Italian white wines because of the mineral, herbs, and citrus flavors. Guado al Tasso is a fantastic winemaker.
Sicily Alta Mora Etna Bianco 2016 65- The black volcanic soil of Sicily imparts “unique flavors in the grapes grown there. There are fantastic mineral and citrus flavors in this “sun baked” white wine.
Soave Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 2015 70- A very “crisp” [high acid] wine which allows it to pair with rich food. Great apple and pear fruit flavors.
Friuli Bastianich Vespa Bianco 2014 72- This is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay with some “nuttiness”
Umbria Paolo Bea Arboreus 2010 100- Paolo Bea is a master winemaker in Umbria. His wine are true to the terroir where the grapes grow. This wine has intense stone fruit [apricot] and honey flavors.
J. Hofstatter Gewürztraminer Kolbenhof 2015 100-This wine has a lot of stones fruit [peach-apricot] flavors. Ask the Sommelier to describe all the Riesling wines [bone dry-dry-semisweet-sweet] on the list. See which matches with your preferred style of wine.
Chardonnay Aldo Conterno Chardonnay Bussiador 2014 140- A very “rich” and buttery Chardonnay with great honey and mineral flavors. Aldo Conterno is a master winemaker in Barolo.
Dolcetto Elio Altare d'Alba 2015 50- A dark colored red wine with intense black cherry fruit flavors.
Sardinia Pala Cannonau Riserva 2014 70- The volcanic soil of Sardinia imparts a “unique” flavor to the grapes grown there. This very “cherry” and spice red wine is a perfect example.
Super Tuscan La Mozza Aragone 2011 80- A blended wine [Sangiovese-Alicante-Syrah] with dark fruit [blueberry-blackberry-blackcherry] flavors. What makes this a nice choice, is the 7 years of bottle age to allow the tannins to soften and evolved fruit flavors to emerge.
Barbera Roagna d'Alba 2012 85- Barbera wines are some the best values on a restaurant list because they have dark fruit [blackberry-blackcherry-plum] and spic flavors. They are usually priced right, like this one. BTW this one has 6 years of bottle age which will soften the tannins and allow the fruit flavors to emerge.
Ribera del Duero Finca Villacreces 2012 90- This Spanish red [Tempranillo grape] has a lot of bing cherry and black cherry flavors.
Rosso di Montalcino Valdicava 2014 90- Do you like Brunello di Montalcino? Meet his “younger” “skinny” brother. Rosso di Motalcinos are made with the grapes from the younger vines. There are “some” of the same great dark fruit [plums-black cherry], spice, and earthiness flavors in Rosso di Montalcino and they are great red wine values on a restaurant list.
Valpolicella Buglioni Amarone della Valpolicella 2010 150 2010 150- This 8 year old Valpolicella has black cherry, blackberry, dark plums, and licorice flavors. The bottle age will have softened the tannins.
Navarra Magana Reserva 1997 170- Here is a sleeper pick. This Cabernet/Merlot/Tempranillo blend is amazing at 20 years old. The black cherry and “earthy” flavors are evolved and complex.
Rioja Muga Gran Reserva Prado Enea 2009 180- An excellent Rioja from the very good 2009 vintage. Muga is a fantastic winemaker.
Barolo Oddero Villero 2004 200- This Barolo is produced by the Oddero family run winery. This “hand crafted” Barolo is from the near perfect 2004 vintage, with classic tar and rose petal scents.
Barolo Boglietti Brunate 2008 215- You need at least 10 years of bottle age, to allow the intense tannins of the Nebbiolo grape to soften and allow the red [cherry] and black [blackberry-dark plum] fruit, licorice , and anise flavors to emerge. Here you have the necessary bottle age from the very good 2008 vintage.
Brunello di Montalcino Canalicchio di Sopra 2004 225- This Brunello [Sangiovese] has all the dark fruit, spice, and licorice flavors. Brunellos need time to soften the “tough” tannins, and this one has the necessary 14 years.
Barolo Aldo Conterno Cicala 2009 250- Aldo Conterno is an “old school” master winemaker in Barolo. Here is a Barolo with crushed rock, bing cherry, and licorice flavors. The 2009 vintage was excellent, so there will be intense fruit flavors in this 9 year old bottle.
Umbria Paolo Bea Sagrantino Cerrete 2009 250- Paolo Bea is a master winemaker in Umbria. His “fast ball” grape is Sangratino. His wines need time to allow the intense red and black fruit flavors to approach their apogee. The 2009 vintage was very good.
Aglianico Lonardo Taurasi 2004 300- The Aglianico grape produces a “rustic” wine with a lot of structure [tannins-acid]. There are great red [cherry] and black [plums] fruit flavors. A great wine to pair with steak, osso bucco, and roasted chicken.
Barolo Bruno Giacosa Azienda Agricola 2001 300- Have you ever tasted almost 20 year old Barolo from a master winemaker like Bruno Giacosa? BTW the 2001 vintage was amazing and so is this wine.
Barberesco Pio Cesare 1998 300- I love Pio Cesare Barberesco [Nebbiolo] because they have very earthy characteristics. This 20 year old bottle is from the amazing 1998 vintage, so the blackberry, black cherry, and licorice flavors will be very evolved and complex. Wow!
