The Breslin Wine List Review- 1 Michelin star

Champagne

PHILIPPE GONET BRUT SIGNATURE , BLANC D E BLANCS, L E MESNIL-SUR-OGER NV .................... 95- This is NV[non vintage] Blanc de Blanc [all Chardonnay grapes] Champagne from a a very good winemaker. A good value.

LARMANDIER-BERNIER BRUT NATURE , 1ER CRU, TERRE D E VERTUS, VERTUS 2010 ............................... 130- If you prefer very “dry” Champagne, this is your pick. When you taste this Champagne your tongue will be “dusty” and your cheeks “puckered”.

PIERRE PETERS BRUT , LES CHÉTILLONS, BLANC D E BLANCS, L E MESNIL-SUR-OGER 2008 ........ 220- 2008 was an excellent Champagne vintage, so this Blanc de Blanc [all Chardonnay grapes] will be fantastic. I prefer Blanc de Blanc Champagne because there is a very “special” quality to the fruit flavor.

Rose

MAS D E CADENET GRENACHE/CINSAULT/SYRAH , SAINTE VICTOIRE, PROVENCE, FR 2016 ............ 55- This is classic Provencal rose.

WEINGUT FRIEDRICH BECKER PINOT NOIR , PETIT ROSE, PFALZ, GER 2016 ....................................................... 62- This Pinot Noir rose from Germany is loaded with “super strawberry” flavors. A great pick.

White

DOMAINE LES CANTATES JACQUERE , CHIGNIN, SAVOIE 2014 ................................................................. 45- Here is a beautiful white wine that is “crisp” [high acid] which makes it pair well with food. Some apple and pear flavors.

JEAN MANCIAT CHARDONNAY , LES CRAYS, MÂCON-CHARNAY 2015 .......................................... 64- This is Chardonnay from the Macon region in France, where great wine is made for a great price. Other white Burgundies, Puligny and Chassagne, are much more expensive. A great value wine.

RÉGIS MINET SAUVIGNON BLANC , POUILLY FUMÉ, LOIRE 2015............................................. 65 - Sauvignon Blanc has very interesting fruit flavors [citrus+pineapple]. French sauvignon Blanc wines are not “grassy” and “grapefruit’” flavored.

PICHLER-KRUTZLER RIESLING , PFAFFENBERG, KREMSTAL, AUSTRIA 2015 .......................................... 65 - Ask the Sommelier to describe [bone dry-dry-semisweet-sweet] all the Riesling wines [German-Italian-Austrian-French] in this price point. See which matches your style of wine preference.

ENFIELD WINE CO. CHARDONNAY , CITRINE, SIERRA FOOTHILLS, C A 2015....................................... 80- If it is California Chardonnay you desire, pick this classic one.

DOMAINE MOREAU-NAUDET CHARDONNAY , 1ER CRU, LES VAILLONS, CHABLIS 2015 .................................... 89- This is Premier Crus [grapes are grown in the special Les Vallons vineyard] is full of complex fruit and mineral flavors. Chablis is my favorite white Burgundy.

PAOLO BEA TREBBIANO SPOLETINO , ARBOREUS, UMBRIA 2010.......................................... 100- Paolo Bea is a master winemaker in Umbria. This wine will change your pre-conceived notions of what Trebbiano wine is. Be brave and order this fantastic wine.

ARNOT-ROBERTS CHARDONNAY , WATSON RANCH, NAPA VALLEY, C A 2015.................................. 130- This is a beautiful Chardonnay that is very unlike the typical “oaky” and “buttery” wines. A very special wine.

Red

J.L.CHAVE SELECTION GRENACHE/SYRAH , MON COEUR, CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2015 ............................. 65- Chave is a master winemaker in Hermitage France. Here he is using “sourced” grapes from other growers to make a great dark colored, rich, and earthy red wine. A great red wine value.

CANTINA DEL PINO BARBERA , ALBA, PIEDMONT 2014 ...................................................................... 68- Barbera can be one of the best value wines on a restaurant list. They are dark and spicy with a lot of “character” for the price. They do not need a lot of bottle age to be enjoyed.

TURLEY ZINFANDEL , JUVENILE, NAPA VALLEY 2015.......................................................... 74- Helen Turley knows Zinfandel. Order this Zin and you will be amazed by the grace and beauty of this “big” wine.

CASANUOVA DELLE CERBAIE SANGIOVESE , ROSSO DI MONTALCINO, TUSCANY 2011 .................................... 78- If you love Brunello di Montalcino, here is his “skinny” “younger” brother. With a lot of the same flavors as Brunello, but with out the “weight” [body], Rosso di Montalcino are a great option. This one is from the great 2011 vintage, and has 7 years of bottle age, which smooths out any tannins. A great red wine value pick.

JEAN FOILLARD GAMAY , MORGON, CÔT E DU PY, BEAUJOLAIS 2015 ............................................ 88- Do not mistake this Beaujolais for that “super fruity” wine. This is Crus Beaujolais from the Morgon region. Cru Beaujolais can be as complex and nuanced as Burgundy Pinot Noir. A great food wine and a great value.

DOMAINE GRAMENON GRENACHE , LE SAGESSE, CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2015 ............................................. 90- Don’t mistake very good Cote du Rhone for a “simple” red wine. This wine is from the great 2015 vintage and will be packed with black fruit [dark plums-black cherry-blackberry-cassis] and spice flavors. This wine will be anything but “simple”.

EYRIE VINEYARDS PINOT NOIR , SISTERS VINEYARD, DUNDEE HILLS 2014 ...................................... 98- If it USA Pinot Noir you desire, pick this one from Oregon. I prefer the Pinot Noirs from Oregon as compared to California Pinot Noirs, because the fruit is darker and more complex. Did you know that Oregon and Burgundy are on the same latitude?

LOPEZ D E HEREDIA TEMPRANILLO/GARNACHO , VINA TONDONIA, RIOJA, SPAIN 2005 ……………..100- A fantastic Rioja from the great 2005 vintage. This wine has 13 years of bottle age to allow the fruit flavors to evolve and become more complex. As the fruit in the wine ages, it converts from fresh fruit flavor to stewed fruit flavors.

CHARLES AUDOIN PINOT NOIR , LES LONGEROIES, MARSANNAY 2014 ........................................ 105- Marsannay Pinot Noirs are very bright in color and rich in red fruit [strawberry-raspberry] flavors.

FRANCK BALTHAZAR SYRAH , LES CHAILLOTS, CORNAS 2014 ............................................................ 125- This is fantastic Syrah from Cornas France and Franck Balthazar is a master winemaker. There are a lot of beautiful dark fruit [black berry-dark plums-black cherry] flavors and the wine is is perfect balance. Balance is when a wine acts like a wave. The fruit flavors rise in your mouth, crest, and then slowly recede in a long finish. A balanced wine, is the hallmark of a great winemaker.

SIMON BIZE PINOT NOIR , AUX GRANDS LIARDS, SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 2014 ..................... 128- This serious and “rustic” Pinot Noir is made by a master winemaker in Savigny-Les-Beaune Burgundy.

L E PIANE NEBBIOLO , BOCA, PIEDMONT 2009........................................................129- Boca is located just out side of the legal “Barolo and that is why this 9 year old Nebbiolo wine is such a fantastic value. Nebbiolo wines need bottle age to soften the tannins and allow the fruit flavors to emerge.

FRÉDÉRIC MAGNIEN PINOT NOIR , 1ER CRU, LES BORNIQUES, CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 2013 ........... 138- Chambolle Pinot Noir is almost “ethereal”. It is light in body but with intense fruit flavors. Think of a strong woman.

MAYACAMAS CABERNET SAUVIGNON , MOUNT VEEDER, NAPA VALLEY 2008.......................... 168- If it California Cabernet you desire, pick this one. I think the wines from Mount Veeder have a “special” quality to their Cabs. This wine also has 10 years of bottle age, which I think is necessary to shed the sometimes intense tannins of California Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Magnums

PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO NEBBIOLO , BARBARESCO, PIEDMONT, ITALY 2012 (3-LITER)………………………….425 Having a party? Want to make a splash? Nothing says celebration like a 3 Litre [4 regular bottles] bottle of wine. Think of all the Pomp and Circumstance surrounding this BIG bottle’s arrival to the table. This is a great wine and is made by a consortium of growers in Barberesco. It is 5 years old but you can drink this wine young. It is said the best juice from the vineyard goes into the large format bottles.
