Aldea Wine List Review- 1 Michelin Star
Sidónio de Sousa, Branco Brut Nature, "Special Cuvée,” 60.00- This Portuguese sparkling wine has beautiful citrus flavors. If you are entertaining guests, order this wine and when you need a second bottle of “bubbly”, you will look like a sport.
Cava, Rose, Raventos I Blanc "de Nit", Conca del Riu Anoia N 65.00- Pick this rose sparkling wine from Spain and drink it through out your dinner. Rose sparkling wine pairs very well with rich food because it is “crisp” [high acid], cold, and “bubbly”.
Pierre Moncuit, "GC", Blanc de Blancs, Mesnil-Sur-Oger, Cote de Blancs 120.00- This Champagne is Blanc de Blanc [all Chardonnay grapes]. I prefer this style of Champagne because there is a “special” quality when you taste it.
Agrapart & Fils, a Avize-Grand Cru "Terroirs" Extra Brut, Cote des Blancs 170.00- This is classic [Pinot Noir] Champagne. Great “mousse” [ the bubbles themselves present a aromatic of their own] and great balance.
Tarlant, "La Vigne d'Or, Brut Nature, Vallée de La Marne 2003 295.00- Brut Nature is the “driest” style of Champagne produced. This beautiful Champagne will leave your tongue “dusty” and your cheeks “puckered”.
Esporão Reserva, Antão Vaz- Roupeiro, Alentejo, 2015 72.00- This is a beautiful Portuguese wine with citrus [lemon/lime] and stone fruit [peach/apricot] fruit flavors.
Sancerre, Pierre Martin "Monts Damnes", Loire Valley, 2016 75.00- Sancerre [Sauvignon Blanc] is a great white wine with food. There are “interesting” fruit flavors [citrus+pineapple].
Quinta de Soalheiro Reserva, Alvarinho-Minho, Vinho Verde, 2015 90.00- This Portuguese Alvarinho [Albarino in Spain] wine is in perfect balance. The wine acts like a wave. When you taste it, the fruit flavors rise, crest, and then a long slow finish. A sign of a great winemaker. Also a lot of mineral flavors.
Pouilly-Fuisse, Daniel et Julien Barraud, Burgundy, 2015 95.00- This is French Chardonnay from the Macon region, where great wine is produced without the high price tags of other white Burgundies [Puligny-Chassagne]. The 2015 was a great vintage.
Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Rhône Valley 2014 187.00- I love this wine and recently purchased 6 bottles. This is a “big” [a lot of body] white wine with tons of complex fruit flavors [apples-pears-melon-herbs]. Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe is one of the best producers in Chateauneuf du Pape. A perfect wine to pair with rich food.
Quinta do Perdigado, Alfrocheiro, Dao, 2010 75.00- This wine is dark in color, with fruit flavors to match [blackberry-blackcherry-plum].
Santenay 1er Cru, Roger Belland "Beauregard" Burgundy, 2013 85.00- This French Pinot Noir is very colorful [bright red] and flavorful. A lot of red fruit flavors [strawberry-raspberry].
Niepoort, "Redoma" Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, 2013 Douro 95.00- A black cherry colored wine with some dark fruit flavors [blackberry-dark plum]. A very structured wine [sinewy tannins] to prevent the wine from tasting “flabby” [unfocused fruit flavors].
Rioja Reserva, Remelluri 2010 90.00- This is one of my favorite Riojas. The 2010 vintage was excellent so the bing cherry flavors in this wine will be “bright”. Close your eye when you first sip this wine. You may mistake this wine for a Bordeaux.
Rioja Reserva, Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" 2004 124.00- This Rioja has 14 years of bottle age and is from the excellent 2004 vintage. The bottle age will soften the tannins and allow the complex evolved [cooked/stewed fruit] flavors to emerge.
Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Chateau Maucoil "Privilege" Rhone Valley 2010 135.00- The 2010 vintage in Chateauneuf-du-Pape was amazing! The dark [plums-blackberries- black cherries] and spice flavors will be very present. Because of the 8 years of bottle age, the fruit flavors will be somewhat evolved [cooked/stewed fruit flavor].
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Bussola, Veneto 2010 150.00- This Amarone produces by Bussola is fantastic. The wine explodes with intense black cherry flavors but is in perfect balance [The wine acts like a wave. When first tasted, the fruit flavors rise in the mouth, crest, and then descend in a long slow finish]. Balance is only achieved by a master winemaker.
Barbaresco, Castello di Verduno "Rabaja" Riserva, Piedmont 2010 160.00- The 2010 vintage in Barberesco was near perfect, so this 8 year old wine have enough black and red fruit flavors for you to enjoy.
Pommard, Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux "Les Perrieres" Burgundy, 2008 160.00- This Pinot Noir from Burgundy is produced in the village of Pommard . This is a Premier Crus [grapes are grown in the special Les Pierre vineyard] wine and therefore will have a lot red fruit flavors with a “masculine” structure [taught and sinewy] almost “chewy”.
Vega Sicilia "Alion", Ribera del Duero 2013 200.00- This an entry level red wine from the famous winemakers at Vega Sicilia. I have been fortunate to taste this wine on several occasions, and have always found it to be amazing.
